Sugar in My Life

Sweetness in life—I’ve come to know it well,

In moments that shimmer, like a soft caramel.

It calls to me gently, a comforting song,

In fruit on my tongue, in places I belong.

I’ve tasted its whispers in kind, simple deeds,

In laughter that bubbles and answers my needs.

I’ve basked in the warmth of a lazy sunbeam,

And shared chai by moonlight, lost in a dream.

A hand in my own—how tightly I’d cling,

Love in its essence, not needing a ring.

Those are the moments that sweeten my soul,

Filling the cracks and making me whole.

Then come the days when we gather and cheer,

The cake, the candles, the ones I hold dear.

Music surrounds me, our feet meet the floor,

With streamers above us and hearts that soar.

In those bursts of joy, I feel life ignite,

A permission to revel, to shine, to delight.

Yet somewhere inside, I’ve learned to discern,

That sweetness too rich can quickly burn.

I’ve known the weight of indulgence unchecked,

The sugar that soothed, then left me wrecked.

When blood turns to fire, and limbs start to tire,

A diagnosis delivered—a truth I can’t mire.

Diabetes knocked, not with fury, but grace,

A silent companion I had to face.

It taught me that joy, when measured with care,

Becomes something deeper, more honest to bear.

So now, I savor what’s real and what’s right—

The hug of the dawn, the stars in the night.

I choose the ripe mango, not candy so sweet,

I walk through this life with mindful feet.

Because the best kind of sugar I’ve found inside,

Isn’t stirred in a cup or in sweets I’ve denied.

It’s found in a gaze, a promise well-kept,

In memories lived, and tears I’ve wept.

Yes—sweetness still tempts me, but now I see through—

The richest delight is in balance, and true.
