When I Cross the Divide

I stand upon this jagged line,

A world of gold and one of mine,

My eyes meet yours for just a breath,

A silent moment, almost death.

I wear my pride like shining armor,

Counting victories, feeling stronger,

Yet inside, I feel the hollow ache,

A shadow that I cannot fake.

I see your worn-out shoes, your dreams unspoken,

A silent hope, a fragile token,

And when I look up to the sky,

A pang of envy makes me cry.

Deep in my heart, wounds quietly grow,

Jealousy, pride-things I don’t show,

We’re both carrying scars unseen,

Lost in a world that’s torn between.

But sometimes I wonder if I could see,

Beyond the walls that blind me,

To realize we’re not so far apart-

Just two lost souls with hopeful heart.

And in that moment, I might believe,

That you and I are more than deceive,

For beneath the surface, I finally see-

We’re all the same, you and me.

But hearts will change when eyes can see-

Not “you and me,” but “we are we.”

For every soul is just the same,

Before the world invented names.
