Breath Through the Reed

Beneath the sky’s wide, fading canopy,

I walked alone, with dreams no one could see—
A hollow reed, once cast aside and bare,
Now shaped by love, to sing and softly care.

I am a flute—my breath, the only tune,
A voice for those who wander under moon.
Though carved by grief, and played by sorrow’s hand,
My notes bring warmth the cold cannot withstand.

I am the shepherd of the lost and small,
The street’s forgotten—I have room for all.
Their trembling hands find safety by my side,
Their fears dissolve beneath my quiet guide.

I play them songs that turn grey skies to blue,
A soul-made-instrument, both pure and true.
And in each note, a part of me is poured—
A child who gives, though nothing he has stored.

But one pale dusk, a silence touched my song—
A doctor’s word: "Your breath won’t last too long."
My lungs, the wind within this wooden frame,
Will fail me soon—but still I play the same.

I do not weep. Instead, I hold my flute,
And say, “Let joy take root where pain was mute.”
“My body fades—but let my music stay,
And guide your steps when I have gone away.”

I show you then a sapling, small and green—
A hope-tree rising where my pain has been.
“I’ve played my part—but you must now begin,
To be the breath that keeps this song within.”

Each leaf becomes a vow you swear to keep,
Each root, a bond in earth so dark and deep.
And as I lie, the flute still in my hand,
The wind blows through it, like a last command.

The song goes on, though I have closed my eyes—
It echoes soft beneath the starlit skies.
My breath is gone, but melody remains—
A life like flute: once played, yet unrestrained.

Now in the shade of that green canopy,
You grow, you laugh, you live in memory.
For one frail boy, like flute with hollowed frame,
Poured out his soul—and left behind a flame.

Though silence falls when breath is gone,
My song lives on — in you, be strong.
Each note I played, a seed of light,
Grow hope from pain, and hold it tight.

For life is brief, like wind through reed,
But love’s pure song will always lead.
When shadows come, remember me —
The flute that played to set you free.
