Toddy of the Blue Backwaters

By blue lagoons, where green fields kiss the sea,
Under cloudy skies, young slanting coconuts bloom.
Their flower buds swelling, a promise of what's to be,
From neera sweet to kallu in the room,
a taste of joy.
At dawn, a tapper climbs on dried
coconut husk knotted with coir around each tree,
Through mist or rain, a sickle in the gloom.
Sometimes by night, a lantern lights his way, a silent plea,
A dance with height, dispelling morning's fume, a dedication grand.

Pebbles from streams, making sharpening powder,
Flatten knives from the blacksmith's fire,
Sharpened, cleaned, wrapped, ready for the task.
Earth burnt to dust, packed in husk, tied higher,
Tools of a trade, passed down through time's vast mask, for livelihoods planned.

He climbs again with care, behind the spathe's soft mask,
Strikes gently with medicinal oiled deer bone, a patient, ripening hand.
Rhythmic music fusions from each deliberate tap,
A secret melody, across the fertile land, a silent happy band.
Wraps it with piece of palmleaves, binds it tight, then hangs the mudpot—
To catch the drip, the gift, sweet toddy, drop by drop, within that silent spot.

He pours the sweet and sour toddy at first light,
From earthen pots and flask of bottle gourd, into bamboo it will sway,
The sap so thick with foam, a foamy, rich delight,
A living brew, fresh for the coming day, to brighten our way.

Beyond the palms, where village pathways meet,
The humble Shaap now beckons, warm and bright.
Here, earthen pots hold secrets, bitter-sweet,
And laughter spills into the fading light, a heartwarming sight.

With fiery curries, fish from backwater's gleam,
And kappa steaming, rich in spice and heat,
The oldest brew, a shared, convivial dream,
Our cheeks flush warm, life's rhythm, oh so sweet, a happiness complete.

From purest Neera, innocent and mild,
To Kallu aged, with tang and gentle sting,
Each drop a story, by the land compiled,
A nectar from the palm, on joyful wing, our spirits it will bring.

We laugh along village paths, happiness we seek.
That untouched toddy, pure, untouched and free,
That toddy is our favorite, for all the world to see.
A nectar from the palm, a taste of land and life's decree.

Yet in this joy, a truth we must recall:
"Consumption of alcohol is injurious to health, for one and all."
So savor moments, with wisdom in command,
A responsible joy, across this verdant land.
