The Border of the Heart
The Border of the Heart
*********************
The map was redrawn with a stranger's ink,
And overnight, the world began to shrink.
The courtyard where we whispered of our dreams,
Was torn apart by borders and by screams.
You stayed behind the fence of rising wire,
While I was swept away by smoke and fire.
***
I carry still the bracelet that you gave,
A silent relic salvaged from the wave.
They tell me I must look ahead, rebuild,
To find a life that’s safe and unfulfilled.
So I become the bread, the strength, the stone,
To keep my fragile family from the bone.
***
But every time the evening shadows fall,
I hear your distant voice begin to call.
My sister wears the smile that should be mine,
While I am fading slowly past the line.
They think I am a pillar, stern and deep,
Who only works and has no tears to weep.
***
They do not know that when the lanterns die,
I look across the dark and bitter sky.
The country of my youth is lost to time,
And loving you has grown into a crime.
I gave away my life to build their peace,
But from this heavy ghost, there’s no release.
***
I did not want to just survive the storm,
To keep the shivering and the cold ones warm.
I wanted to be held, to love, to stay-
Before the borders tore our youth away.
