Don’t Wake Her Now
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before the dawn breaks through this ashen sky,
A tender breeze slips softly wandering by,
I rock you slow where broken shadows lie,
“Not tonight be still,” I trembling cry.
***
Oh, wandering wind, don’t cross her face,
The shells fall down, they shatter every place,
Go rest upon the distant, silent trees,
And spare my child your restless, haunted seas.
***
The walls have turned to dust around our breath,
Yet moonlight dims, afraid to echo death,
It softens beams upon this fractured room,
Just bright enough to guard you from the gloom.
***
The restless rooster hushed its cry tonight,
Though distant fire still stains the dark with light,
Even the crickets soften all around,
As if they fear to make a single sound.
***
“They took the arms that once would shelter you,”
She whispers low to skies no longer blue,
“Your father sleeps where silence now has grown,”
Yet still I bear this night for you alone.
***
Hush now, my child, don’t wake to hear their cries,
Let dreams be softer than these burning skies,
No bread, no milk, no water left to give,
Yet in your breath, I beg myself to live.
***
Your lips still search for life I cannot keep,
So I become the shelter of your sleep,
No cloth to warm the trembling of your skin,
So I wrap night itself and pull you in.
***
Oh, night, walk slow on silent, careful feet,
Let no sharp sorrow dare our hearts to meet,
Fold every grief, every fear so deep,
Far from the place where you are lost in sleep.
***
Beyond these ruins, something darker grows,
In human hearts, a crueler shadow flows,
I fear the living more than falling fire,
For wicked hands burn cold with sharp desire.
***
They circle close where widowed silence stays,
Like wolves that wander through these shattered days,
So I plead softly to the darkened air-
“Let nothing living find us hiding here.”
***
Time, be kind ,don’t rush away from me,
Let this small breath be all I’m meant to see,
For in your face, so fragile, faint, yet bright,
You are my dawn within this endless night.
***
If I must fall before the morning’s start,
Let all my love stay beating in your heart,
So sleep, my child, while all the world is gone,
Don’t wake just yet, until a kinder dawn.
