The Fivefold Snare
In the forest's hush, a deer did stray,
Charmed by music, led astray.
A gentle sound, a lilting tune—
It danced beneath the dying moon.
Yet beauty sang its final breath,
And lured the beast to silent death.
The elephant, in jungle deep,
Sought pleasure's touch and soothing sleep.
A silken noose, a subtle feel—
What seemed like love became a deal.
It trusted what the senses gave,
And walked with grace into its grave.
A moth beheld the fire’s gleam,
Mistaking flame for daylight’s dream.
"O shining jewel," it cried in glee,
"And thus, to light, I offer me."
But truth was not in what it saw—
Just beauty’s mask, with fatal flaw.
The fish, enticed by taste so sweet,
Rushed to the bait it longed to eat.
A fleeting joy, a hungry bite—
Then hook and line snuffed out its light.
For what we crave, when unrestrained,
Can turn to chains, so finely chained.
The bee, drawn close to scents divine,
Collected gold in endless line.
But hands unseen, with stealth and might,
Stole the nectar by the night.
Its toil was turned to someone’s prize—
Desire can wear a thin disguise.
Yet man, O man! with senses five,
How canst thou ever hope to thrive?
When deer and moth and fish do fall
To just one craving’s siren call,
What fate is thine who heeds them all?
You chase the sound, the touch, the taste,
You bathe in form, in fragrance waste.
But every path the senses pave
Leads not to light, but to the grave.
A trap so sweet, so soft, so wide—
You smile, step in... and slip inside.
So pause, and see with inner eye,
The truth that makes illusion die.
The world may shine with sugar'd lies—
But wisdom knows where poison lies.
Let viveka light the road ahead,
Where reason walks, not passion led.
Let vairagya cleanse the heart of thirst—
Lest love of pleasure bring the worst.
True joy, the sages always say,
Is not where fleeting things hold sway.
But in the stillness, deep and wide,
Where self and God alone abide.
So be not deer, nor moth, nor bee—
But one who wakes, who learns to see.
Who breaks the bond, who walks the shore
Of endless bliss, forevermore.
